About Brian Calderón Tabatabai

Brian Calderón Tabatabai is more than just the Mayor of West Covina; he is a dedicated teacher, coach, and lifelong advocate for the residents of District 1. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, Brian has always been deeply connected to his community. He first campaigned on a platform of transparency and neighborhood empowerment, which led to his successful election to the West Covina City Council in 2020.

As a lifelong Democrat and an elected official, Brian has worked tirelessly alongside community organizations, nonprofits, the business sector, unions, local residents, and various stakeholders to tackle critical issues such as homelessness, renter protections, racial and economic justice, and the rights of Indigenous and LGBTQ communities. In his role as a Los Angeles County representative on the League of California Cities Public Safety Commission, he continues to advocate for alternatives to incarceration, striving to create a more equitable justice system.

During his tenure as mayor pro tem, Brian joined forces with unions and The People’s Collective for Environmental Justice to block a proposed Amazon warehouse project that threatened to bring low-paying, non-union jobs and degrade the air and water quality in District 1. Amid the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Brian facilitated partnerships with Los Angeles County and local church organizations to feed thousands of families in need.

Brian’s leadership on the West Covina City Council has been marked by significant victories for the community. He led efforts against the establishment of an unnecessary private health department, secured funds to repair sports fields that were crucial to youth football, and ensured that street-paving projects included support for economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. As Mayor, he has made history by organizing the city's first Pride event as part of the SGV Pride Tour and securing over $16 million to address the issue of homelessness in West Covina.

A proud graduate of UCLA with a master’s degree in leadership from California State University, Los Angeles, Brian has spent more than two decades as an educator. His career began as an elementary school teacher for students with special needs in Baldwin Park. After three years at Kenmore Elementary School, he moved to the El Monte Union High School District, where he combined his love for teaching with his passion for coaching youth sports. At El Monte High School, Brian thrived both in the classroom and on the field, leading the school’s football team to its first title in 30 years and earning the title of Coach of the Year before moving to Charter Oak High School, where he led the team to an undefeated season and a 20th league championship.

Brian’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. He has been instrumental in reforming school discipline policies to better address students' social-emotional needs and was one of the main authors of El Monte Union High School District’s ethnic studies program. He remains a steadfast advocate for students, ensuring they receive the best education and support in safe, modern schools.

Brian's dedication to his community is deeply rooted in his family’s legacy. He carries with him the strength of his Abuela, who fought to ensure her children had access to college-prep courses in the 1960s; the courage of his father, who escaped a brutal revolution to build a better life for his family; and the compassion of his mother, who has dedicated her life to helping others.

These values drive Brian’s work with his students, athletes, and the community. They also guide him and his wife, Celenia, in raising their son, Anthony, in a community as strong, diverse, and supportive as West Covina. Together, they are committed to building a brighter future for all residents.
